March 10. A Correspondent from abroad, to whom the Publick are indebted for a Variety of authentick Intelligence, assures us that he lately saw the Pretender at Berlin; that he appeared with an unusual Gaiety, and constantly attended the Court; that the Prussian Monarch affected to treat him with great Respect, and appeared to sympathise with that unfortunate Adventurer in his Sufferings; that the Pretender's Attendants were a few Scots Gentlemen, one of whom was extremely old, and seemed to be his greatest Intimate.

He passed his Time (those Days excepted on which he attended the Court) in a very retired Manner, admitted few or no Visitors, and seemed averse to receiving the most trifling Compliments which some Persons were willing to pay him. He accustomed himself to much Exercise, rose early, and seldom omitted taking an Airing on Horseback every Morning.

The various Accounts of the Chevalier's indulging a Propensity to Liquor our Correspondent says he believes to have been ill founded, as during his Stay at Berlin he did not appear at all inclined to that Vice, nor had he in his Person the smallest Trait of the Kind.

In his Manners he appeared affable and engaging to Excess, but there is a distant Reserve, a Kind of cloudy Suspicion, which manifests itself in a Conversation with Strangers; not that this appears his real Temper, but it seems an acquired Habit, owing to Reflection, Chagrin, and the repeated Instances of human Perfidy which, during the Course of his Peregrinations, he has, to his Sorrow, experienced.

The Chevalier arrived at Berlin just before the Revolution in Denmark was effected, and left that City the Instant it became a Topick of publick Conversation.

A correspondent saw the Pretender at Berlin, where he appeared with unusual gaiety, attended court, and was treated with great respect by the Prussian Monarch, who sympathized with him. His attendants were a few Scots gentlemen, including one extremely old intimate. He lived retired, exercised much, rose early, took morning horseback airings, and showed no propensity to liquor. He was affable but reserved with strangers due to past experiences. He arrived just before the Danish revolution and left when it became a public topic.
