From the Boston Transcript.
We are credibly informed, that there are two clubs, consisting of young men and boys between the ages of 16 and 20 years, who are regularly organized, hold secret meetings, and are distinguished by peculiar badges of designation. The one is called the "Metamora Club," the other "The Young Bursters;" (classical and appropriate!) the one holds its meetings in a certain room in a certain house (which we will not more minutely describe at present) in Court street, the other celebrates its orgies in a certain room, in an uncertain house not, not so far from Province House Court that the arm of Justice cannot reach.
The members of these clubs assemble with commendable punctuality, when any thing 'is on hand,' and having drugged themselves with intoxicating draughts, over the gambling table, sally forth by threes and fours in quest of adventures. Unprotected females are insulted, and abused, and unsuspecting foot passengers, if alone and unguarded, are knocked down, and trampled upon and put in jeopardy of their lives. When one party has displayed their prowess by the commission of some gross outrage against the peace of the city, they return to the "club room," to narrate their chivalrous deeds, and another is detached on a second expedition. They wear disguises, boast of their adroitness and bid defiance to watchmen and police officers.
The members of the 'Metamora Club' wear caps (or did wear them;—we presume they will change the fashion, now we have let the cat out of the bag) with a tassel falling down over the right eye. "The Young Bursters" donned their "Bonnets of blue," so that the dangler hung jauntily suspended over the left ear; a most ominous characteristic, indicating a "foregone conclusion."
This is not an exaggerated statement.—These combinations of young ruffians actually exist, and not a night passes that more or less of the associates do not infest some peaceable neighborhood, offending the ear with blasphemous oaths and obscene conversation, or intimidating the weak and defying the strong. We are promised a list of names, which has been some time in preparation, and so soon as completed we shall hang them up like pirates on a gibbet, as a warning to others who may be following their footsteps.
A correspondent of the Evening Gazette states that a lady and gentleman were grossly insulted and abused by a deputation from the "Metamora Club," in Green street, on Friday evening.
It will be seen by the following from the Traveller, that two of the "Bursters" have been apprehended.
New Secret Society.—Yesterday two young lads were arraigned before Mr. Justice Rogers, charged with committing an assault the evening previous upon one Mr. Cochran, who, with a friend, was quietly passing at the time. The attack was wholly unprovoked; and they were each ordered to pay a fine of $3,33, with a moiety of costs each. From facts incidentally discovered, these young men, in connexion with about fifteen or twenty others, of known dissolute habits, have been in the constant practice of assembling, nightly, at a room near Joy's buildings, procured for the purpose, and there projecting and carrying on their nocturnal purposes in entire secret. They designated themselves the "Metamora Club," and among its members the utmost secrecy is always enjoined. From previous unprovoked attacks upon peaceable and unoffending citizens, the character and designs of these young confederates have been fully developed, and the utmost severity of the law will be inflicted upon future transgressors.
