The Legislature and Convention.—Now that the battle is over and the smoke cleared away, we are enabled to present a detailed statement of the result. With respect to the Legislature, there is no difficulty whatever—the political opinions of all the members elected are well known and easily classified: but of those chosen as delegates to the Convention, several are yet in doubt; some were not run on party grounds, and consequently the result cannot be arrived at with perfect accuracy, and can scarcely be considered a fair test of the political sentiments of a majority of the State.
The Senate consists of 17 members. Last year they stood 10 Locofocos, 8 Whigs.—This year the Whigs gained a Senator, so that the parties are divided, 9 Locofocos, 8 Whigs. The election of Mr. Morse to Congress, causes a vacancy in the county of Attakapas, so that the Senate now stands 8 Whigs, 8 Locofocos; with every prospect of the election of a Whig in Attakapas, giving us a majority in that body for the first time in many years.
The House stands 34 Whigs, 26 Locofocos.
The Whigs gain 8 members and lose 2 nett gain 2." They likewise gain a Senator.—At the close of the session last year the Whig majority on joint ballot was 1. This year it will be probably 9.
The Convention stands 38 Whigs, 38 Locofocos.
We believe the statement to be freer from errors than any yet offered. We have taken great pains in making it up, and obtained positive information in regard to several members. It is seen that parties are as nearly divided as possible in the Convention. The Radicals, properly speaking, will not number more than 25. The Convention, generally, is composed of men of high intelligence, undoubted patriotism and mature experience, and the people may expect at their hands reform, not destruction—the correction of abuses and errors, not the overthrow of our institutions.
