A Chicagoan Arrested for Murder on the Plains.
[From the Chicago Tribune.]
Yesterday afternoon, Mr. B. C. Yates, whom we mentioned yesterday in connection with the capture of the Elkhorn bank robbers, arrested in the Sherman House a young man named M. S. Stickney, who is charged with being implicated in a murder committed on the Plains, in October last. Another supposed accomplice, G. W. Black, was arrested on the previous day in Rockford, and is now lodged in the county jail in this city. The particulars of the murder are as follows:
Stickney, who had been residing in Salt Lake City previous to leaving that place formed the acquaintance of Black, and started for the Plains in company with one J. A. Bickering. Stickney had made an arrangement with Black to pay his way to Chicago on condition of receiving 200 feet of silver mines in Pahranagat, in the southeast portion of Nevada. Bickering and Stickney then proceeded together as far as North Platte, Black following on horseback.
In the course of their journey a quarrel arose regarding the loss of a mule which had strayed away from camp. The three went out to search for the mule, and Bickering mysteriously disappeared.
Suspicion attached to the two young men, and the detectives have been ever since on their track. Stickney is well known in this city, where he is respectably connected. It is not supposed that he is the author of the crime, but it is suspected that he made off with a sum of money which was the property of the murdered man. The prisoner will be taken from this city this morning.
