A tremendous gale was experienced
here on Monday last; it commenced about
11 o'clock on Sunday night from
N. E. and continued with increasing violence
until 2 o'clock the next day, when
it gradually subsided. It had the effect of
raising the tide to an almost unprecedented
height: all the wharves including
those which had hitherto been deemed above
the reach of the tide, were inundated
almost up to Wide Water Street. Much
confusion consequently ensued in those
warehouses having their lower floors level
with the ground, as the water rose
with such rapidity that the damageable
articles could with difficulty be removed
out of its reach in time to save them.
But little comparative injury however
has been sustained in the town or harbor
from this strife of the elements.
Some trees and fences have been blown
down, and two or three vessels drifted
on shore, but will be got off with little
trouble. We are as yet unable to give
any accurate account of the damage sustained
by the shipping below, the statements
of different persons who have come
up, differing materially. It appears however,
that the British ship Hamilton
which dropped down on Friday last,
was driven on the bar at the mouth of
Nansemond river; a schooner and a
sloop were drove ashore on Craney Island;
and since the tide has subsided
remain nearly high and dry, and a pettiauger
broke from her anchorage under
Sewell's point, and drifted over towards
Newport news: There were a number
of shingle vessels bound out, and fears
are entertained that they could not survive
the fury of the storm
We learn by a pilot who came over
from Hampton yesterday, that the pilot
Boat Hiram of Hampton, fell in with
two schrs. on Sunday to the southward
of the capes, both bottom upwards, one
of them was ascertained to be the Petty
Augur President of N. York, the other
was a long black schooner, with a white
moulding supposed from her build to belong
to Baltimore:
