Full Text

CUBA.

A new Captain-General, has recently been appointed and entered upon his duties, in the place of Canepo, who has of late governed the Island in the worst possible way. A Havana correspondent of the Tribune, represents the advent of the new governor, and the retiracy of the old, as causing great satisfaction at that place. "Canedo, as soon as he gave up the command, was left to find his way out of the hall where the ceremony took place, without a friend to accompany him. He looked round, but no one took the hint, which circumstances enraged him to a very great degree."

Canedo has winked at, and it is said in every way encouraged the bringing to the Island kidnapped Africans as slaves; even receiving a bonus for every one landed on the Island, contrary to law; and in violation of treaties between Spain and Great Britain. The correspondent already quoted says the new Governor is understood to be an abolitionist, and that when serving as governor of Porto Rico, he never permitted the importation of slaves thither.—Tribune
