POPLAR STORE DAMAGED BY FIRE SUNDAY

An early morning fire destroyed a garbage bin and charred the rear wall of the Jack and Jill Store in Poplar, Sunday, Nov. 20.

The fire was noticed at approximately 2:00 a.m. by Earl Kasten of the Poplar police department who radioed the airport. Mrs. Jess Sisson, who was on duty at the time, called the fire department.

Firemen were able to bring the fire under control soon after arrival on the scene. An intake fan located at the rear of the building had filled it with smoke. The firemen set up an exhaust fan and spent several hours removing the smoke from the building.

Howard Lapke, owner and manager of the store stated that there was little damage to the property. Fire Chief Florn Martin reported that fortunately the fire was detected early, and firemen reached the scene before the fire became very far advanced.
