Father William Mayer Announces His Orders to His Congregation.
At Sacred Heart church yesterday morning, the pastor, Rev. William Mayer, read a letter from Bishop Haid of the Order of St. Benedict calling him to the management of St. Mary's college at Belmont, Gaston county, North Carolina.
Father Mayer announced that he would have something to say concerning the letter next Sunday, and it is thought that it will be his farewell to his large and beloved congregation.
His departure is a blow to the parishioners of the Sacred Heart, and they will make every effort to retain their pastor. A petition will probably be sent to the bishop asking that Father William be permitted to remain here, but it will hardly avail of its purpose.
Father William's congregation has become endeared to him and he to them, and each loathes to give the other up. But the beloved pastor will probably leave next week to assume charge of his new mission. This is a position of honor and trust and calls for a man of ability and administrative powers, all of which Father William possesses.
