Nephi Ratification.
To the Editor of The Herald.

I read in Sunday's Herald an account of a ratification meeting held at Nephi a few evenings since, which gave me some satisfaction, being, as I am, a warm advocate of a change in the mode of conducting election campaigns.
I was glad to see that a few people posing usually as Liberals, in opposition to the Mormons, have made up their minds to be, in name at least, members of one of the great political parties of the country, even though they march under the "bloody shirt."
If your correspondent "T." is correct in his synopsis of the speech of Colonel Varian, I admit that I have been laboring under a mistake as to the mental caliber or the honesty of that eloquent gentleman. When Mr. V. stated that "twenty years ago the Democrats broke down the walls that had surrounded China for thousands of years and admitted the 'little brown man' to our shores," he gave the best evidence which could possibly be afforded that he made false statement knowingly and wilfully, or that he is very ignorant as to what took place twenty years ago.
Colonel Varian may choose which horn of the dilemma he pleases.
One of the noticeable things mentioned by your reporter was that banner with the Utah coat of arms with this legend: "Utah, the Queen of the West--may she soon shine in the galaxy of States."
And so it has come to this at last.
The Republicans who attended the Nephi meeting, composed of such men as U.S. Varian, Judge Emerson, George Sutherland, A. G. Sutherland and others, who are representative Republicans, are committed to Statehood for Utah. Now, the question to be solved is this: Are the Republicans of Utah going to put in nomination a candidate for Congress at the next election, and will that candidate be a Republican or will he be a "Liberal?"
Or will the "Liberal" party nominate a candidate as usual, and if so, will that class of Democrats in Utah who failed and by that failure refused to ratify the nomination of Cleveland and Thurman and the platform of the Democratic party, vote for the Liberal or Republican nominee? These are questions to be answered only as the events transpire.

Yours,
DEMOCRAT.

Main Argument

the writer, a democrat, supports changes in election campaigns and is pleased with a republican ratification meeting in nephi endorsing utah statehood, but criticizes colonel varian's dishonest or ignorant claim that democrats opened china to immigration twenty years ago; questions whether republicans will nominate a true republican or a liberal for congress, and how democrats who rejected cleveland will vote.
