Attacks Bastrop Lady as She Opens
Her Kitchen Door.
Bastrop, Tex., Feb. 23.—As Mrs. Burl
Williams stepped out of her kitchen
door to throw out a pan of dish water
a big, black negro, who had concealed
himself near the door, struck at her
with a stick of wood, barely missing
her.
After the stick flew out of his hands
he grabbed the lady and began
to
choke her.
With a desperate effort
she wrenched herself from the brute
and ran for the house screaming. The
brute, still not frightened, caught her
dress, but fortunately his hold tore
loose and she escaped into the house.
Neighbors hearing her screams start-
ed to her rescue and frightened the
negro away. There is no clue as to
who the perpetrator was, hence no ar-
rests have been made.
Mrs. Williams is the wife of Burl
Williams, a barber of this place.
Her throat is considerably swollen
and the marks of the negro's fingers
are visible. She is in a very nervous
condition, but not dangerously ill.
The Williams home is in a very pub-
lic place, being only a block from
Main street, and just across the street
is Mrs. Sam Higgins' boarding house,
there being an electric light at the
corner of the yard.
The lady described the negro as be-
ing tall and slender, wearing black hat
and coat.
