Washington Correspondence of the Portland Advertiser.

Washington is quieter than usual to-day, there being no assembling of our legislators in either wing of the Capitol. The rumors abroad, announce that the committees engaged in the Post Office investigations, have fallen upon yet new facts, and such facts as will irresistibly convince all candid people, that this, the most important department of the Government in many respects, has for years been perverted for the basest electioneering purposes. Grundy it is said, is heart sick with the defence his allegiance to party compels him to set up:--and Hawes of Kentucky, a Jackson member in the House on the committee, avers that the department cannot be justified. "It is also added, that some one in the department must be made a victim, in order to propitiate public justice; and as Gen. Jackson will by no means consent to the sacrifice of Barry, Parson O. B. Brown has been selected as the victim. But the main difficulty is with Barry, who is wholly incompetent to discharge the duties of such an office; not that he is the worst man in the world, but that his education, his habits, his negligence, his want of industry, and business application, wholly unfit him to discharge the duties of such a laborious station,--so that if only Parson Brown be driven out of the department, a sleek and well-gorged leech will only be banished to make way for one that is lank and hungry.

Almost every Jackson man in Washington, who knows any thing of the management of affairs in the Post Office Department, acknowledges in conversation that Barry ought to be removed,--that he is incapable of sustaining the credit or utility of the department;--and yet as politicians, on the floor of Congress, or in the press, they are compelled to sustain him, because Gen. Jackson will hear nothing, and believe nothing against him--such is the servility here,--such the degraded man-worship,--such a fear have the idolators of the power of the idol whom they have set up, and whom they now must adore!
