PORTLAND. Feb. 14.

The express with the joyful news of peace, arrived about twelve o'clock last night, and it was immediately made public from Webb's. The bells commenced ringing, and the roused inhabitants, all in alarm, heard the doleful cry of "Fire" but which very suddenly changed to the cheering sound of "Peace" "Peace." The night was passed in demonstrations of joy, and the sun rose upon more pleasant faces than ever before animated our suffering town. At twelve o'clock to-day salutes were fired from all the forts, and the independent companies paraded, and evidenced the universal feeling, by repeated feux de joie.
