Our County Fair

The United States despatch steamer Mary Sanford, Capt. Rogers, from Charleston, on Saturday night, 12th, with despatches to the Department, and a mail from the fleet, arrived at Fortress Monroe the afternoon of the 14th, and after communicating with the fleet at Newport News, sailed the same evening for New York, where she arrived on Wednesday morning. When she left Charleston Bar, Gen. Gilmore's forces were actively engaged in erecting batteries on the upper end.
of Morris Island, and Forts Moultrie and Johnson were keeping up a very heavy fire upon them. The rebels have two 15-inch guns in Moultrie. Sumter is entirely silenced, but they have a garrison there, and their flag is flying—no attempt having been made to occupy it since the failure of the boat expedition. The health and spirits of the fleet were good. The monitor Patapsco had been sent to Port Royal for repairs. Commander Daniel Ammen has assumed the position of Chief-of-Staff with Admiral Dahlgren, much to the satisfaction of the whole fleet, great confidence being felt in his energy and ability. There is nothing said by this arrival about that white flag reported to have been flying over Fort Moultrie. This story originated in some mistake or misapprehension.
