A few Days ago Mount Vesuvius began to rage in a most terrible Manner, casting forth Flames, great Stones, and a prodigious Quantity of flaming Bituminous Matter, with a louder and more frightful Noise than that of Thunder itself. That Bituminous and Sulphurous Matter ran like a River of Fire in less than 24 Hours from the Summit of the Mountain to the Sea, which is Twelve Miles.
The Night following, all the Mountain resembled a Coal of Fire; the Smoke, which was very thick, rose to a prodigious Height and very strange Figure; and the Cinders, Ashes, and other combustible Stuff, fell in such vast Quantities, that all the Boroughs and Villages thereabouts were covered, and the Inhabitants almost frighted to Death at the incredibly large Stones that were hurled from the Mountain among them.
It is a long Time since Vesuvius has been known in such a Flame.
