GOOD INTENTIONS FRUSTRATED,

And a Life Paid the Penalty—An Accident Near Missoula.

Special to the Independent.

Missoula, June 26.—About six o'clock this evening two extra freight trains pulled east out of Missoula, one being three minutes ahead of the other. When about a mile out of town the head train broke in two about the middle, the caboose and a number of box cars stopping behind a curve. Conductor Alexander, in charge of the train, realized the position, and while getting off saw two men on the front of the caboose who were beating their way. He tried to get them off, but the men refused to go, evidently misunderstanding the conductor's good intentions. He managed to pull one of them away just as the engine of the rear train crashed into the cars. The caboose and one box car were badly smashed and the man between them crushed to death. His remains have been brought into town. All that can be learned regarding him is that his name is Thompson. He is about 35 years of age.

An inquest is to be held in the morning.
