The above press dispatch from Havana announces the establishment of a "Protestant" church in Mexico, but which of the thousand and one contradictory sects of the age, is not mentioned.
There are, at all times, in the metropolis of the Mexican Republic, several thousand foreigners, who, although established in business, are mere adventurers, and the probability is, that this "church" is established in their interest.
The dreary and cheerless doctrines of Protestantism have few or no advocates among the Mexican people, many of whom, although they live in defiance of, and in opposition to, the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, have no sympathy with any of the conflicting sects which distract this country. Occasionally, some suspended or excommunicated priest, who has been ignominiously repelled from the Mexican priesthood, may claim to be in sympathy with a wretched and absurd schismatical movement, instigated by a Puritan missionary society in New York, and supported by funds collected from a class of people who take no interest in the civilization of the barbarians at home.
The members of the so-called "Mexican Reformed Church" are either mostly men in buckram, or they are the scum of the church which arise to the surface during the political convulsion of the day.
From what we have learned of the "Reformed Mexicans," the most of them are an ignorant and miserable set, who are now duping the American Protestant missionaries.
