RAIL ROAD MEETING.

According to notice, as given through the city papers, a highly respectable meeting of the citizens convened at the Court House on Tuesday evening, the 26th inst.

On motion of Mr. L. Howes, Willard Carpenter, Esq. was called to the chair, and C. Bell appointed Secretary. The Hon. J. Lockhart being called upon by the chair to explain the object of the meeting, arose and spoke in substance, as follows: This meeting is convened for the purpose of adopting such measures as may be deemed necessary and proper to procure a change in the line of the contemplated Rail Road, from Cincinnati to St. Louis, so as to make Evansville, on the Ohio river and Mt. Carmel on the Wabash, in Illinois—points upon said Road; and then entered into an elaborate argument tending to show the practicability of constructing the Road and the great advantages the southern route possesses over either of the other routes spoken of. The meeting was further addressed by Messrs. C. I. Battell, Jas. G. Jones, J. Ingle, Jr., Danl. Morgan, M. W. Foster, Jas. E. Blythe and Wm. H. Chandler, all their arguments going on to show the great advantage, a Rail Road from Cincinnati touching the Ohio river at this point thence to St. Louis, had over all other contemplated routes; after which it was resolved, that a Committee of twelve be appointed to open a correspondence with persons interested in the construction of said Road and to procure such statistical information as might be deemed necessary to a proper understanding of the merits of this route and to adopt other measures to procure such legislation as may be advisable upon the subject, and if they should consider it necessary, to call a Convention to meet at such time and place as they may appoint.

Whereupon the following gentlemen were appointed said committee: Jas. Laughlin, Jr., C. Bell, Lewis Howes, Jas. G. Jones, John Shanklin, John Ingle, Jr., W. Carpenter, John Henson, Wm. H. Chandler, Saml. Orr, C. I. Battell and M. W. Foster, Esqrs., after which on motion the meeting adjourned.

WILLARD CARPENTER, Ch'm.
C. Bell, Sect'y.
