Convict Women In Carolina Case
PORTSMOUTH, Va.-(ANP)-One Negro woman and the white women connected with the same case were convicted and given suspended sentences in the Circuit court of Norfolk County, Va., on charges growing out of an abortion case last week.

Mrs. Pinkie Toxey, 42-year-old Oak Grove resident, was given a three year suspended sentence on a charge of attempted abortion. She was also placed on a five year probation by Judge Edward L. Past, who gave the defendant the benefit of acting under undue stress.

The three white women implicated with Mrs. Toxey are Nina Rose Poyner, Barco, N. C., Pearl Sawyer, Elizabeth City, N. C., and Louise Nelson, Coinjock, N. C. They were each given a 30-day suspended jail sentence conditioned on their good behavior.

The white women were reported to have brought a 14-year-old North Carolina white girl to Norfolk county in order to have an abortion performed on her. The girl did not appear in court and has now married.

Officers who made the arrests testified that the illegal operation was being performed on a side road near Oak Grove when they drove up and made their investigation.
