Opening of St. Johns River Bridge to be Feature of Importance at Jacksonville
Jacksonville, Fla., June 7.—A three day celebration, beginning June 30 and ending July 2, with numerous carnival and Mardi Gras features, will mark the opening of the St. Johns river bridge, spanning the St. Johns river between Jacksonville and South Jacksonville and completing the last link of the continuous Dixie Highway into Florida.
Duval county, in celebrating this event, is inviting the entire state of Florida to participate and enjoy three days of entertainment and festivity.
Elaborate preparations are being made to make this celebration the largest and the best of the kind ever arranged in the south.
Every Florida city is being invited to send a sponsor to take part in the ceremonies. Governor Hardee and his cabinet will be present, as will be the mayors of many Florida cities, board of county commissioners, heads of educational institutions, and thousands of visitors drawn from all parts of the state.
Particular stress is being placed on the entertainment events of the celebration.
A program of massive parades, street dancing, an official ball at which the governor, the sponsors, maids of honor and others attending the celebration will be guests, displays of fireworks each night, a baseball tournament, band concerts, chorus of several thousand voices and numerous other features already have been arranged.
F. C. Groover, general chairman of the celebration committee and B. K. Hanafourde, general manager, together with many sub-committees are working out complete details of the celebration which already promises to prove the most successful event of the kind ever arranged in the state.
Special low round-trip rates will be available on all railroads into the city. Ample accommodations for visitors are assured and a crowd of at least thirty thousand visitors is expected.
