Full Text
If there were no other evidence that Louis Napoleon is an usurper, a tyrant and a knave, the fact that he has muzzled the Press of Paris and will not allow a paper to be printed that does not sustain his views and promote his ambitious designs, is itself sufficient to prove his guilt. An honest man does not fear a free Press. It is only knaves who dread its scathing rebuke. The muzzling of the press by Napoleon is a tacit acknowledgement of his guilt. Despotism cannot endure a free press, and hence all despots make it one of their objects to stifle its freedom. There is not a despotism in Europe that could stand three months, if the press were free.
